Altona Meadows Childcare: Our Top 3 for 2026

Altona Meadows’s three top-ranked centres for 2026 are Hobsons Bay, Montessori Academy and Playmakers, with one holding Exceeding NQS.

In the City of Hobsons Bay.

More about Altona Meadows

Hobsons Bay Children's Centre holds the only Exceeding result among the long day care services here, clearing the mark in five of its seven areas, and it is the cheapest of the three at $145.00 a day. Altona Meadows Montessori Academy follows at $170.00 with the largest review record in the suburb, and Playmakers Early Learning is third at $163.00, open from 6:00am.

How we chose: we weigh five things together: NQS rating and how recently it was issued, parent reviews, program and environment, fees and inclusions, and practical fit including hours and Free Kinder access. We do not accept payment from any centre to appear on this list, and we do not rank by who owns a centre. Read how we rank. What an Exceeding NQS rating actually means →
Two of these three publish no inclusion list

Hobsons Bay and Montessori Academy both show "None" against inclusions on their register entries, while Playmakers names eight items. An empty list is not evidence that nothing is included: both centres describe meals on their own websites, and Montessori also lists nappies and wipes. It does mean their daily rates cannot be compared like for like, so ask each one, in writing, what the fee covers before you decide on price.

An independently owned 65-place service on Central Avenue, this centre has operated for more than twenty-seven years and has had the same sole owner and director for twenty-three of them, which is an unusual run in a sector with high operator turnover. Four rooms carry children through: the Rainbow room from about four to six months, the Ocean room from two to three years, then a Jungle room and a separate Kinder room both covering three to five. A chef prepares meals in the centre's own kitchen.

Its May 2023 assessment returned Exceeding overall, above the standard in five of the seven quality areas, and no other long day care service in Altona Meadows holds more than one area above the standard. Educational program and practice and physical environment are the two assessed at Meeting. The previous result, from October 2018, was Meeting with one area above the standard, so the 2023 assessment was a substantial climb. The regulator visited again in May 2026 without altering the rating.

At $145.00 a day, flat across every age band, it is $18.00 below the next cheapest centre on this page and $34.00 below the dearest service in the suburb. The register lists no inclusions against that rate, which is not proof that nothing is included, and the centre does describe meals cooked on site; it does mean the figure cannot be set against Playmakers' eight named items as a like-for-like comparison. Funded kindergarten runs in the year before school with a bachelor-qualified teacher, and Early Start Kindergarten is offered to eligible children.

Two practical limits are worth weighing. The youngest room starts at around four to six months rather than six weeks, so a family needing infant care earlier than that should look elsewhere, and the register publishes no vacancy data at all for this service, directing families to ring. Its Google record is 4.9 from eleven reviews, and four of the five most prominent are between four and nine years old, which means the review evidence largely predates the current rating.

What parents say

My first impression of the center was that it was warm and homely, all the team welcomed us and made us feel really comfortable.Veronica V. via Google
My child had a bit of separation anxiety but they were very patient with him and he now loves going & always has a big smile on his face once he see's the carers.Anna B. via Google
The staff are brilliant with our son and we're always well informed of what he does in the day.Neil C. via Google
Our take

The quality gap here is genuine and the price gap runs the same way, which is unusual: five areas clearing the mark, on the lowest of the three rates ranked here. Three things temper it. The rating is now over three years old, the review record is both thin and mostly ancient, and the register carries no inclusion list, so the saving cannot be verified against what the other centres cover. A family that distrusts a 2023 assessment and wants current feedback has a fair case for the centre ranked second, which has seventy-three recent reviews and was assessed fifteen months later.

Best for: Families chasing the only Exceeding long day care result here, on the lowest of the three rates, who will happily ring and ask what the fee covers.

Staffing arrangements: Exceeding · 6 areas Meeting

Regulatory detail and operational conditions

Above the standard in staffing arrangements, the only Meeting-rated centre in the suburb with an area above the standard. First assessment, so there is no earlier result to read it against. Two conditions apply: outdoor play equipment must meet the Australian Playground Standards with attention to falling space and impact areas, and natural elements must be incorporated and maintained in the outdoor spaces. Both are class-applied clauses rather than findings about this centre.

The biggest service in Altona Meadows at 124 approved places, this centre runs a Montessori program on Balaclava Avenue from six weeks through to six years: an infant program to two years, a toddler program from two to three, then a combined kindergarten and preschool program for three to six. It is one of sixty services its operator runs nationally, and it states it opens fifty-one weeks a year, which is the only weeks-per-year figure published by any centre in the suburb.

Its August 2024 assessment returned Meeting overall with staffing arrangements above the standard, making it the only Meeting-rated service in Altona Meadows with any area above the line. It was the centre's first assessment, so there is no earlier result to compare, and the regulator returned in November 2025 without changing it. Two conditions sit on the approval, both of them clauses applied across whole classes of service rather than findings about this centre: the AS 4685 playground-standards requirement and a natural-elements requirement for outdoor spaces.

The fee is $170.00 a day at every age band, $25.00 above the centre ranked first and $7.00 above the one ranked third. The register lists no inclusions against it. The centre's own site describes nutritious meals and snacks, nappies and wipes, sun-safe and allergy-aware practices, incursions and excursions, enrichment programs and development reports, but those are the operator's words rather than a register list, so they cannot enter a like-for-like fee comparison. Victorian kindergarten funding is available for the funded year.

Its parent record is the strongest in the suburb by volume: 4.8 across seventy-three Google reviews, most of them posted within the past few months rather than years back, and both casual and permanent places were showing Monday to Friday when we read the register. The trade is the length of the day. At 7:30am to 6:00pm this is the latest opening and the shortest day in Altona Meadows, a full two hours shorter than Playmakers down the road, which will rule it out for anyone who starts work before eight or finishes late.

What parents say

Not just hygiene and well organised facility, the educators are responsive and creative. They did a fantastic job encouraging teamwork while still focus on the independence.james Z. via Google
My son previously attended another childcare centre, but we were looking for a stronger focus on education, structure, and consistent routines. Since moving to Altona Meadows Montessori Academy, I have seen such a big improvement in him.Cris T. via Google

Our take

Second place is close, and it turns on how much weight you give a three-year-old rating against seventy-three recent reviews. This centre came up for assessment fifteen months later than the leader, holds one area clear of the mark where the other Meeting centres hold none, holds nearly twice the places, and publishes its weeks per year. It sits second because Hobsons Bay is above the standard in five areas to its one and charges $25.00 a day less. For many families a blunter fact decides it: nowhere here closes a shorter day.

Best for: Parents after a Montessori program in the largest local centre, with the deepest and most current body of parent feedback.

This 75-place service on Fitzpatrick Drive keeps the longest day in Altona Meadows by a wide margin: 6:00am to 6:30pm, twelve and a half hours, two hours more than the centre ranked second. It is the operator's only trading centre, with two more listed as coming soon, and the approval passed to that operator in November 2024. The centre offers take-home dinners on Mondays, which several parents mention, and it is the sort of detail that matters more to a family doing a long day than a brochure line.

The August 2025 assessment returned Meeting in all seven areas, none above the standard, and it is the second most recent result in the suburb. It belongs to the current operator, since the transfer predates it by nine months. The earlier Meeting result from March 2022 was issued to the previous approval holder and should not be read as this operator's record. The regulator visited in February 2026. One oddity on the register: its vacancy grid shows availability on Saturday and Sunday, when the published hours say it is closed.

Its fee is $163.00 a day at every age band with eight items named on the register: breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, other meals, nappies, the educational program and excursions or incursions. That is the only complete list among the three ranked centres, and it is what makes the comparisons on this page possible at all. Measured against the reserves, it undercuts One Tree by $8.97 and Peach & Plum by $16.00 for the same coverage or better, and beats Busy Bees by $7.10 while adding two items.

One gap is real and we have not papered over it. The centre publishes no age range anywhere we could reach: its homepage states none, the about page returns an error, and the search budget that would let us look further is exhausted. A Google review mentions a child starting at six months, which is a parent's account rather than an enrolment policy. So the age field here says what we know, which is nothing, and the centre's suitability for an infant is a question for the phone.

What parents say

The Monday takehome dinners have been great as well. Our son eats too well there from what we're hearing and making friends with both the kids and adults.Alisa M. via Google
We started with PlayMakers when our little one was only 6 months old.Solange P. via Google
I visited Playmakers Early Learning for a tour and had a great experience. The centre is clean, welcoming, and well organised.jagdeep s. via Google
Our take

Third here is about evidence rather than quality. This centre has the fullest inclusion list on the register, the longest day in the suburb, a rating that belongs to the operator running it, and thirty-five reviews at 4.8. What it cannot show is an age range, a kinder program or weeks per year, because none of that is published anywhere we can read, and the suburb's two higher-ranked centres do confirm their age ranges. Resolve that on a call and it has a fair claim on second. The unresolved former trading name is a separate question worth asking.

Best for: Shift workers needing a 6:00am start, and anyone who wants every item in the fee named on the register rather than described on a website.

Quick fee comparison

1Hobsons Bay$145.00
2Montessori Academy$170.00
3Playmakers$163.00

Across the three the mean rate is $159.33 a day, ignoring any subsidy, and each centre charges one figure for every age band. Subsidy approval covers all three. Two of the three name nothing inside the fee on their register entries, so those rates cannot be set item for item against the third. Captured 11 September 2026; ask each centre what stands today.

Childcare fees vary by age group. The rates shown may reflect different age bands at different centres, so confirm the rate for your child's age directly with each centre.

About childcare in Altona Meadows

Altona Meadows spreads south-west from Altona across postcode 3028, which it shares with Laverton and Seabrook, and it sits in the City of Hobsons Bay. The streets around Central Avenue, Queen Street and Point Cook Road are mostly detached family housing from the 1980s onwards, with Cheetham Wetlands and the bay on one side and the Princes Freeway on the other, and the suburb has kept a steady population of households with young children rather than turning over the way the newer estates further west have.

Six long day care services hold an address here, which makes this one of the deeper markets in the west, and every one of them is eligible to rank. The differences are in what each fee covers rather than in quality: five of the six sit at Meeting, and two of the six publish no inclusion list at all on the register, which makes a straight price comparison impossible for those two. Capacity ranges from 58 places to 124.

The practical question most local families put to us is about the length of the day, because it varies more here than the fees do. One centre opens at 6:00am and closes at 6:30pm, a twelve and a half hour day; another runs 7:30am to 6:00pm, which is two hours shorter and the shortest in the suburb. Before weighing ratings or rates, it is worth checking which of those fits your own drop-off, because the cheapest centre on this page is not the one with the longest day.

Looking wider? Our Western Suburbs guide lists every suburb we rank across the area, with each one's top centres.

Laverton and Seabrook share postcode 3028 with Altona Meadows, all three inside the City of Hobsons Bay. Six long day care services carry an Altona Meadows address, and all six survive the eligibility screen.

Child Care Subsidy (CCS)

Subsidy approval covers all six services here, the ranked three among them. Families meet only the shortfall, and since the calculation weighs combined earnings against declared activity, the published rate is never the figure that lands on an invoice.

Free Kinder

Hobsons Bay runs funded kindergarten in the year before school with a bachelor-qualified teacher, plus Early Start Kindergarten for eligible children, and Montessori Academy states Victorian kindergarten funding is available. Playmakers publishes nothing about kinder, so ask before assuming a funded place.

The day length varies by two hours

Playmakers runs 6:00am to 6:30pm; Montessori Academy runs 7:30am to 6:00pm. That is a two-hour difference across the day between two centres a few minutes apart, and for a shift worker or a city commuter it will matter more than the $7.00 between their fees.

Other services in Altona Meadows worth knowing about

One Tree Altona Meadows Children's Service

The closest reserve. Meeting in all seven areas from August 2026, the freshest assessment in the suburb, though that assessment moved staffing arrangements down from Exceeding. 58 places, the smallest here, at $171.97 with seven named inclusions and 5.0 from fifteen Google reviews. Kindergarten runs five hours a day, four days a week.

Peach & Plum Early Learning Centre

Meeting in all seven areas from February 2025, 96 places, 6:30am to 6:30pm, at $179.00 with seven named inclusions, which is the highest rate in the suburb. Holds 4.6 from twenty-seven reviews and runs integrated three and four-year-old kinder. Its own site names a different owner entity from the register, which is unresolved.

Busy Bees at Altona Meadows

Meeting in all seven areas from October 2023, the oldest current rating among the local Meeting centres, with 114 places at $170.10 and six named inclusions. Its 4.0 from forty-seven reviews is the lowest score in the suburb. Two conditions apply: climbable equipment must stay 1.9m clear of perimeter fencing, and poles near boundary fences must be maintained so they cannot be climbed.

Cooraminta Kindergarten

Standalone kindergarten rated Exceeding NQS. Sessional kinder only, so it is not a long day care option and is not comparable with the centres above.

Russell Court Kindergarten and Childrens' Centre

Standalone kindergarten rated Exceeding NQS, sessional programs only.

Altona Meadows Kindergarten

Standalone sessional kindergarten. Not to be confused with Altona Meadows Montessori Academy, whose own website headings also read "Altona Meadows Kindergarten & Childcare"; they are separate services with separate approvals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best childcare centre in Altona Meadows VIC?

Hobsons Bay Children's Centre on Central Avenue. It is the only long day care service in the suburb rated Exceeding, clearing the mark in five of its seven quality areas, and at $145.00 a day it is simultaneously the cheapest of the three ranked. Two caveats: its rating dates from May 2023, and its youngest room starts at around four to six months rather than six weeks. Altona Meadows Montessori Academy is the alternative if recent parent feedback matters more to you.

How much does childcare cost in Altona Meadows?

The ranked three publish $145.00 at Hobsons Bay, $163.00 at Playmakers and $170.00 at Montessori Academy, each flat across every age band and before the Child Care Subsidy. Among the reserves, Peach & Plum publishes $179.00. Only Playmakers publishes an inclusion list on the register, so the other figures cannot be compared item for item without asking each centre directly.

Which Altona Meadows centre opens earliest?

Playmakers Early Learning, at 6:00am, closing at 6:30pm for a twelve and a half hour day. Hobsons Bay runs 7:00am to 6:30pm and Montessori Academy 7:30am to 6:00pm, which is the shortest day in the suburb. Among the reserves, Peach & Plum and Busy Bees both run 6:30am to 6:30pm.

Do any Altona Meadows centres have conditions on their approval?

Two of the six do. Montessori Academy must meet the Australian Playground Standards in its outdoor equipment and maintain natural elements in its outdoor spaces. Busy Bees must keep climbable equipment 1.9m clear of perimeter fencing and maintain poles near boundary fences so they cannot be climbed. Both sets are clauses applied across classes of service rather than findings about those centres, which is why neither is excluded from this page.

Is Altona Meadows the same as Altona?

No. Altona Meadows is postcode 3028 and Altona is 3018, and each has its own ranking on this site, though both sit in the City of Hobsons Bay. Laverton and Seabrook share 3028 with Altona Meadows, and the three long day care services in Laverton are outside this page because the register places them in that locality.
