Story House Early Learning Doreen runs from a purpose-built centre on Whitford Way, part of the Story House group that operates across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Licensed for 125 places, it takes children from six weeks to school age and is open from 6:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays, with a nursery, toddler and kindergarten stream. Children move between rooms based on developmental readiness rather than age alone. The service holds a Meeting NQS rating and carries no conditions on its approval.
Learning follows an Early Years Learning Framework-based curriculum the group brands as STRONG Beginnings, split into a birth-to-three Stepping Stones stream and a three-to-five Pathways to School program. Orchard Road Community and Early Learning Centre is run by the YMCA of Whittlesea, a not-for-profit, from a large site on Orchard Road, Doreen. Licensed for 168 places, the largest of the three ranked centres, it offers long day care alongside a funded kindergarten program and outside-school-hours care, and is open from 6:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays. Eight rooms run from a six-week nursery through toddler, pre-kinder and kinder groups. It is also an NDIS-registered provider.
As a community not-for-profit, Orchard Road reinvests in its service rather than distributing profit, which shows in the daily fee: at $100.00 a day it is dramatically lower than the other ranked centres and among the lowest in the northern suburbs. The $100 daily fee is less than two-thirds of the other ranked centres, it has one of the deepest review bases in the suburb at 4.7 across about 123 reviews, it runs a funded kindergarten on site, and as a not-for-profit it is NDIS-registered and community-focused. It is the most recently assessed of the three as well. The one thing to know is the bushfire protocol: like other centres on Melbourne's northern fringe, it closes on Catastrophic Fire Danger days. For families who want strong reviews, funded kinder and a markedly lower fee, it is an easy centre to recommend.

Guardian Childcare and Education Laurimar sits on Painted Hills Road in the Laurimar township and is part of Guardian, a national early learning group. Licensed for 152 places, the largest of the three ranked centres, it takes children from six weeks to six years and is open from 6:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays. It was rated Meeting National Quality Standard in February 2024, an improvement on the Working Towards rating it held at its 2019 assessment, and it carries the highest parent-review score in the suburb.
The program is Guardian's own play-based curriculum, branded To BE Me, paired with a two-year Flying Start to School kindergarten run by degree-qualified teachers, and funded three and four-year-old kinder is built in. The newly refurbished outdoor yard has a wooden fort, tunnels, a worm farm, a water-play sprinkler and vegetable gardens used for sustainability learning. The centre holds design-standard conditions on its approval, covering play-equipment and pole setbacks from the boundary fence and safe outdoor access during works; these are structural conditions set at approval, not the result of any incident or enforcement action.

Doreen is an established family suburb in the City of Whittlesea, anchored by the Laurimar township, roughly 30 kilometres north of central Melbourne. Unlike the growth corridors nearby, it is largely built out, and its seven long day care centres serve a settled population. Daily fees range widely, from a $100 community rate to around $168, averaging near $150 before subsidy.
The Child Care Subsidy applies at all three ranked centres. It is income-tested and depends on your activity hours and the type of care, and for most families it cuts the daily fee by up to 90 per cent. At Orchard Road's $100 base rate, the out-of-pocket cost after subsidy can be very low.

The only family-owned and operated centre in Doreen, on Orchard Road, rated Meeting (September 2023) with a 4.5 parent-review average across about 34 reviews and funded kindergarten. A strong independent option that sits just outside the top three on review depth; phone (03) 9717 2939.
A private centre on Aspect Drive, rated Meeting. Its NQS rating was issued under the previous operator (MCM Early Years Hub) before Eden Academy took over the same service approval, so assess it on its current management rather than the older record.
