Box Hill North Montessori Academy (Meeting NQS, $183.50/day) leads, with Guardian Childcare and Education Box Hill North (Meeting NQS, $190.68/day) second and Mary's Little Lambs Early Learning Centre (Meeting NQS, $168.00/day) third. Every rating was checked against Starting Blocks and the ACECQA register on 20 October 2026; Mary's Little Lambs sits on Medway Street inside 3129 even though Google Maps files it under Box Hill.

How we chose: we weigh five things together: NQS rating and how recently it was issued, parent reviews, program and environment, fees and inclusions, and practical fit including hours and Free Kinder access. At 582-584 Elgar Road, this 108-place service is one of 75 run by the Montessori Academy group. The group markets it as its Box Hill centre, and Google lists it as Box Hill Montessori Academy Child Care Centre, but the address and the register both place it in Box Hill North, and it has held the same approval since September 2020.
Inside are six Montessori classrooms and three separate outdoor playgrounds, organised into an infant program to two years, a toddler program to age three, then a kindergarten and preschool program from three to six. The curriculum pairs Montessori materials with the national Early Years Learning Framework and adds a school readiness program in the final year. The centre says meals are provided fresh and daily.
The March 2026 assessment returned Meeting in all seven areas once more, matching its October 2022 result under the same operator. Two outdoor conditions sit on the approval: one about keeping objects away from fences and meeting the Australian playground standard, the other requiring natural elements in the yards. Both are terms the regulator attaches across many unrelated services, and the register shows no enforcement action.
Starting Blocks shows $183.50 a day for the two youngest bands and $179.50 from 25 months, but its inclusions box reads None. The centre's own page says the fee covers meals, snacks, nappies and wipes and that Victorian kinder funding is included, so put that question to the centre in writing. Hours are 7:30am to 6:00pm, 51 weeks a year, and casual and permanent places were open every weekday in the week of 19 October.
Our take
Montessori Academy edges Guardian on cost in every age band and on how much it publishes about its rooms and yards, while Guardian keeps a longer day. With those pulling in opposite directions, review depth settled it: both score 4.6, Montessori on 75 reviews to Guardian's 58. The catch is the register's empty inclusions list, which makes its rate hard to compare until the centre confirms what is covered. A 7:30am opening will not suit every commuter.
Best for: Parents drawn to a structured Montessori classroom who want funded kinder folded into the fee and can work with a 7:30am start.

Approved in February 2024, this Station Street centre is one of 178 services run by Guardian Early Learning. With 122 approved places it is the largest service on this page, and it is still building a track record: the January 2026 result is the first it has received.
Children move through four rooms: a nursery (six weeks to 18 months), a toddler room to two and a half, and two preschool rooms covering two and a half to three and a half and then three and a half to six. The group's own programs run throughout, including its To BE Me learning approach, a Nutrition for Life menu and Flying Start, a funded kindergarten program that spans two years for children aged 3 to 5.
Its first assessment, in January 2026, came back Meeting on all seven, and an officer called again in September 2026. A single outdoor condition sits on the approval, playground and fence wording that also appears on many other services' approvals. Guardian's site says families can draw up to 15 hours a week of Victoria's Free Kindergarten funding here.
The daily rate is $190.68 in every age band, and Starting Blocks lists six items inside it: breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, nappies and the educational program. Guardian's own page goes further and says excursions are included too. The real constraint is space: no casual or permanent places were showing on any day of the week we checked.
Our take
Guardian shares the longest day of the three with Mary's Little Lambs, 6:30am to 6:30pm, and has the most places. Against Montessori Academy it costs $7.18 more under 25 months and $11.18 more from 25 months; against Mary's Little Lambs it is $22.68 dearer at every age, though it confirms funded kinder and Mary's does not. Both pairings split on our middle criteria, so Google reviews decided. Mary's Little Lambs carries the higher headline score, 5.0 from 19 reviews, while Guardian shows 4.6 from 58; because our method weights the number of reviews behind a score, Guardian ranks above it. Join the waitlist early, because nothing was free when we looked.
Best for: Households with two early-starting commuters who need a full twelve-hour day and are prepared to sit on a waitlist.

Google Maps lists this centre under Box Hill 3129; the ACECQA register places it in Box Hill North. Its earlier result, Working Towards in May 2022, was issued before today's provider assumed the approval on 27 July 2024.

Mary's Little Lambs is a 50-place centre at 27 Medway Street. Its own website and Google Maps entry give a Box Hill address, while the national register records Box Hill North, and on a split like that the register decides the page here. It takes children from birth to five.
The record has two chapters. A previous operator held the approval in May 2022, when the assessment came back Working Towards with five areas below the standard. The current provider took over on 27 July 2024, and the July 2025 assessment, the first under that provider, returned Meeting across every area. Its latest inspection was in September 2026, with no conditions or enforcement action on record.
At $168.00 a day for all ages it costs the least of the three, and Starting Blocks lists eight inclusions: breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, other meals, nappies, the educational program and excursions or incursions. That is a fuller list than either centre above it, and it costs $15.50 a day less than Montessori Academy under 25 months, $11.50 less in Montessori's 25-months-plus band, and $22.68 less than Guardian at every age.
Doors open from 6:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays. Two things are not published: its kindergarten funding, which its website does not mention, and vacancies, which Starting Blocks asks families to request directly. Ring (03) 9898 6974 for both before you plan around it.
Our take
On price and inclusions, Mary's Little Lambs beats both centres above it at all ages, and it keeps a twelve-hour day. It sits third because its ties with Montessori Academy and Guardian came out mixed on our middle three tests, and reviews then decided: its 5.0 rests on 19 reviews, against 75 and 58. Its one assessment under the current owner is a clean Meeting. Ask about funded kinder hours before relying on them.
Best for: Budget-conscious parents after a small 50-place centre where meals, nappies and outings are already priced in.
Full-day rates read from each Starting Blocks service page on 20 October 2026, before the Child Care Subsidy, which every centre here is approved for. Montessori Academy shows no inclusions on Starting Blocks, so ask what its rate covers.
Childcare fees vary by age group. The rates shown may reflect different age bands at different centres, so confirm the rate for your child's age directly with each centre.
Box Hill North has its own postcode, 3129, separate from Box Hill at 3128, though both sit in the City of Whitehorse. Directories often blur the two, and three of the five long day care services examined here describe themselves as Box Hill somewhere in their own marketing or on Google Maps.
Starting Blocks lists eleven education and care services inside the suburb. Six are something else: before- and after-school care at two primary schools, two standalone kindergartens, a kinder attached to the local primary school and a family day care scheme. The remaining five all hold Child Care Subsidy approval, all were operating when we checked, and none shows an enforcement action on its record. Their published days run from 7:30am to 6:00pm at the shortest to 6:30am to 6:30pm at the longest, and three of the five state on their own sites that they run a funded kindergarten program.
Before ranking anything we checked where each service actually is. The national register, Google Maps and each centre's own name were compared for every candidate, and where they disagreed the page says so on the card. Every long day care service here holds Meeting NQS, so the order below rests on assessment dates, fees, practical fit and, where those split, parent review depth. In Manningham, Templestowe is ranked too.
Looking wider? Our Eastern Suburbs guide lists every suburb we rank across the area, with each one's top centres.
Box Hill North is part of the City of Whitehorse and has its own postcode, 3129, separate from Box Hill's 3128.
Child Care Subsidy (CCS)
Montessori Academy, Guardian and Mary's Little Lambs are all approved for the subsidy, which the government pays to the centre on your behalf. Your share is set by combined family income and the hours of work, study or volunteering you report to Services Australia.
Funded kindergarten
Montessori Academy says Victorian kinder funding is included in its fee, and Guardian describes its funded two-year Flying Start program. Mary's Little Lambs does not mention funding on its website, so ask it directly.
Postcode overlap
Several services here use a Box Hill address in their marketing while sitting in 3129. We follow the national register and say so on any card where Google Maps disagrees.
Other services in Box Hill North worth knowing about
Papilio Early Learning Box Hill North
Meeting NQS (March 2026), 152 Dorking Road, 55 places. Its rating date ties with all three ranked centres, but it placed behind each on the remaining criteria. Against Montessori Academy and Guardian it loses on fees ($213.45 a day flat, with one listed inclusion), published program detail and practical fit (both take children to six, have more places and confirm funded kinder; Papilio takes them to five and does not). Against Mary's Little Lambs program detail is level, and Papilio loses on fees ($213.45 with one inclusion against $168.00 with eight) and on hours, an 11.5-hour day against Mary's 12. Google shows it at 5.0 from 73 reviews; our rules let reviews decide only when the other criteria split, and against these three they did not.
Rocket Early Learning Centre
Meeting NQS from July 2023, at 800 Station Street with 86 places. That rating is 24 months older than Mary's Little Lambs' and 30 to 32 months older than the other two ranked results. It publishes no daily rate on Starting Blocks; the register links to the centre's own site instead. A condition requires one educator above the regulated minimum to supervise children outdoors.
Woodhouse Grove Kindergarten, Parkside Preschool and Box Hill North Primary Kindergarten
Sessional kindergartens, not long day care.
Frequently asked questions
Which childcare centre ranks first in Box Hill North?
Box Hill North Montessori Academy on Elgar Road, rated Meeting in March 2026. It ties Guardian on rating date and wins on fees at each age and on published program detail, with Guardian ahead on hours; reviews broke that split, 75 to 58 at the same 4.6 score.
Is Mary's Little Lambs in Box Hill or Box Hill North?
Box Hill North. Its website and Google Maps give Box Hill, but 27 Medway Street sits in 3129 and the ACECQA register records Box Hill North, so it is ranked here rather than on our Box Hill page.
What do the three ranked centres charge per day?
Montessori Academy asks $183.50 in the 0 to 12 and 13 to 24 month bands and $179.50 from 25 months, Guardian $190.68 for every age, and Mary's Little Lambs $168.00 for every age, all before the subsidy. Mary's lists eight inclusions, Guardian six, and Montessori none on the register, though its site says meals and nappies are covered.
Does any Box Hill North centre hold Exceeding NQS?
No. All five long day care services in the suburb were rated Meeting when we read the register on 20 October 2026, so the ranking turns on how recent each assessment is, then on cost, program and practical fit.
Why is Papilio not in the top three?
Papilio Early Learning ties all three ranked centres on rating date but costs $213.45 a day with one listed inclusion, takes children only to five and does not confirm funded kinder. Google shows it at 5.0 from 73 reviews, so it is worth a visit if parent feedback weighs heavily for you.
