Climbed from Meeting, March 2021, to Exceeding. Exceeding holds in four of the seven quality areas. Its operator took over in January 2017, ahead of both ratings. Exceeding is as high as standard assessment goes; ACECQA reserves Excellent for services that apply.

Apple Blossoms Early Learning is a privately owned group of three centres, and its South Melbourne site is at 219 Dorcas Street. Purpose-built for early learning, it holds approval for 52 places, with rooms for six-week-old babies upward, toddlers from two, and pre-kinder and kinder children aged three to five.

Outdoor play and food shape the program. Its natural outdoor classroom uses wood structures left in their natural state, plus a mud kitchen, water pump and sand play, and the grounds hold vegetable gardens, worm farms, compost, fruit trees and chooks whose eggs the children gather. A chef on site prepares organic food, and the curriculum follows the Early Years Learning Framework.

April 2025 brought an Exceeding rating, an improvement on March 2021, with the current operator there since January 2017. Educational program, physical environment, relationships with children and partnerships with families sit beyond the standard; health and safety, staffing and governance are at Meeting. It has no conditions, and February 2025 saw the latest regulatory visit.

A flat $179.00 a day buys eight inclusions at every age: breakfast, morning and afternoon tea, lunch, other meals, nappies, outings and the education program. The rate rose 4.07% from $172 in July 2025. Hours are 7:15am to 6:30pm, and when we checked, ongoing places were free on weekdays while casual days were not. The site names a kinder room but says nothing about funding, so ask about Free Kinder.

Our take

Apple Blossoms carries the newest rating of the five, 15 months ahead of Coventry's, so that pair is decided on rating recency. It is level with Only About Children and Clarendon on timing and still comes out ahead: over Clarendon on cost and fit together, and over Only About Children after a split (cheaper here; more places, casual days and confirmed kinder there), when reviews favoured Apple Blossoms at 4.7 from 47 against 3.8 from 16.

Best for: Families wanting organic meals, nappies and eight inclusions in one flat rate, with chooks and gardens in the week, who do not need casual days.

Regulatory detail and operational conditions

Compliance notice issued 15 July 2026, its one enforcement action within two years. The council plans to pause its own service here during 2027 and 2028 while the building houses Clarendon Children's Centre, with reopening planned for 2029. Rated Exceeding again after August 2019, with five of seven quality areas rated Exceeding; beyond standard assessment, ACECQA grants Excellent only on application.

Coventry Children's Centre is owned by the City of Port Phillip and run by the council on a non-profit basis at 328 to 332 Coventry Street. The council calls it small by design: 60 places in four rooms, with babies from two months in the Possums Room, two- to three-year-olds in Wombats and three- to five-year-olds in Kangas. Its places are filled from the council's central waiting list, which favours households that live, work or study in Port Phillip.

Its January 2024 assessment returned Exceeding, as in August 2019, with five areas rated above Meeting, while children's health and safety, like the physical environment, remained Meeting. No conditions sit with the approval. Starting Blocks does record one enforcement action within two years, a compliance notice dated 15 July 2026; it gives no further detail and suggests asking the service for its compliance record.

In September 2026 the council decided to use the building from 2027 as a temporary home for Clarendon Children's Centre while Clarendon is redeveloped. Its FAQ says the council-operated service at Coventry would temporarily cease during 2027 and 2028, and a report has been requested for late 2027 on reopening Coventry in 2029. Anyone enrolling now should ask what the change means for their place.

At $168.50 a day across all ages, including breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, Coventry is the cheapest of the ranked centres; it charged $162 in July 2025. The council adds a late snack and says a qualified early childhood teacher delivers kindergarten for five hours a day within the full day of care, with the Free Kinder offset built in. The day runs from 7:30am until 6:15pm.

Our take

Coventry ties Only About Children on timing, three months apart, and their comparison split: Coventry is $35.50 a day cheaper to 35 months and $31.00 from 36 months, while the Ferrars Street campus has more places, open vacancies, eight inclusions and no break in service. Reviews settled it, 4.3 across 12 for Coventry and 3.8 across 16 for Only About Children. Against Clarendon the same happened, and 4.3 across 12 beat 4.0 across 5. Weigh the 2027 pause and the July notice before applying.

Best for: Port Phillip households wanting the cheapest daily fee here, from a non-profit council centre, who can plan around its pause from 2027.

Only About Children, a group of 77 services, has operated this 90-place campus at 221 Ferrars Street since March 2014. Its rooms occupy a heritage-listed site built in 1883, split into two buildings the centre names Westside and Eastside. Infants start in the nursery at six weeks, move up to toddlers at two, and move into kindergarten at three.

By the centre's account its kindergarten is known for a two-year school readiness program, and the campus page lists it under Free Kinder, the state-funded program, with Kinder Tick recognition. Learning follows the group's Grow Curriculum in small groups, allied health specialists work with the educators, in-house cooks follow dietitian menus, and staff between them speak Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Mandarin, Hindi and Italian.

Assessed Exceeding in April 2024, it also held that level in December 2019, when every area was Exceeding; now the physical environment and health and safety sit at Meeting. No conditions apply, no enforcement action is recorded, and the regulator called most recently in October 2026. The site's own claim of ten years running at Exceeding goes further than the two ratings Starting Blocks shows.

Fees are $204.00 a day up to 35 months and $199.50 from 36 months, dearer than Apple Blossoms and Coventry in both bands and the under-three rate is up 2.51% from $199 in April 2025. Eight inclusions cover breakfast through to other meals, nappies and excursions. Doors open 7:30am to 6:30pm, with casual and permanent bookings free every weekday. Google and Only About Children's own site give the national 13 86 22 number; the card has the campus line.

Our take

Only About Children offers the largest campus of the three, casual bookings and confirmed Free Kinder, yet lost two split comparisons on reviews: to Apple Blossoms (4.7 on 47 reviews, against its own 3.8 on 16) and to Coventry (4.3 on 12). It held third over Clarendon the same way. Clarendon scores higher at 4.0, but from five reviews, so our volume weighting favours these 16. Its daily rate also tops both rivals, $25.00 a day above Apple Blossoms under 36 months.

Best for: Parents wanting casual days alongside permanent ones and a two-year school readiness kinder at the biggest of the three campuses, who can pay its higher rate.

About childcare in South Melbourne

South Melbourne 3205 belongs to the City of Port Phillip and is the only locality using that postcode. Starting Blocks records seven services there; five of them provide long day care, alongside a standalone kindergarten and an outside school hours program. Every one of the five centres was operating and approved for the Child Care Subsidy at the time of our check.

Four of the five are rated Exceeding, and their assessments fall close enough together that most pairs count as tied on rating date under our method. Whenever program, price and everyday fit then disagreed, Google reviews, weighed for volume, decided; each card sets out its own result.

Two council decisions matter for 2027. The City of Port Phillip plans to pause its own service at Coventry Children's Centre during 2027 and 2028, using the building while Clarendon Children's Centre is redeveloped, and has asked for a report on reopening Coventry in 2029. Clarendon, which narrowly misses the top three, will run from the Coventry building in the meantime.

South Melbourne 3205 lies within the City of Port Phillip, the only locality on its postcode.

Child Care Subsidy

Apple Blossoms, Coventry and Only About Children are CCS approved. Services Australia forwards the subsidy for the centre to take off your account at a percentage worked out from family earnings and approved activity.

Kinder within the day

Coventry builds in the Free Kinder offset, and Only About Children's campus page lists Free Kinder. Apple Blossoms runs a kinder group without stating funding, so check.

Council waiting list

Coventry and Clarendon fill places through the City of Port Phillip's central list, which favours families who live, work or study in the municipality. Apple Blossoms and Only About Children take enquiries directly.

Other services in South Melbourne worth knowing about

Clarendon Children's Centre

Exceeding NQS in every quality area (November 2024), 410 Clarendon Street, 40 places, $180.00 a day in every band, six inclusions. A close fourth: it tied Only About Children and Coventry on rating date, both comparisons split, and their deeper review records decided (3.8 from 16 and 4.3 from 12, against Clarendon's 4.0 from 5). Places come through the City of Port Phillip waiting list, with priority for families who live, work or study in Port Phillip, and the centre moves to 328 Coventry Street in 2027 while its building is redeveloped.

Guardian Childcare & Education South Melbourne

Meeting NQS (June 2024), 97-101 Tope Street, 104 places, $210.54 a day up to 35 months and $207.59 from 36 months, open 6:30am to 6:30pm. Below the four Exceeding centres on rating level. Its approval carries nine building conditions for a multilevel site with a rooftop play space, covering educators on level 1 and between levels, rooftop access, fence-climbing clearance, natural outdoor elements, staff following the outdoor policy, notice of policy changes, and an expert report on its evacuation rehearsal.

Lilian Cannam Kindergarten

Standalone kindergarten only, with no long day care. The council plans redevelopment works there alongside Clarendon from 2027.

Galilee Regional CPS TheirCare

Before and after school care plus holiday programs at the primary school.

Frequently asked questions

Which South Melbourne centre ranks first?

Apple Blossoms Early Learning South Melbourne on Dorcas Street. Its April 2025 Exceeding rating is the newest held by any of the suburb's long day care centres, and it charges $179.00 a day, eight inclusions included, at any age.

Is Coventry Children's Centre closing?

Not now. The City of Port Phillip decided in September 2026 to use the building from 2027 while Clarendon Children's Centre is redeveloped. Its FAQ says the council's own service at Coventry would temporarily cease during 2027 and 2028, with a report due in late 2027 on reopening in 2029.

What enforcement action has Coventry had?

One within two years, per Starting Blocks: a compliance notice dated 15 July 2026. Starting Blocks shows its kind and date, not its subject, and suggests asking the service for its record of compliance. We disclose a notice like this rather than drop the centre from the ranking.

Why does Clarendon Children's Centre miss out?

It ties both Only About Children and Coventry on rating date; each time the program, price and practical-fit comparisons pointed different ways. Reviews then decided, and Clarendon's 4.0 rests on five reviews, against 3.8 from 16 and 4.3 from 12. Every quality area there is Exceeding, and it costs $180.00 a day.

Do South Melbourne fees change with age?

At Only About Children, yes: $204.00 up to 35 months and $199.50 from 36 months. Apple Blossoms ($179.00) and Coventry ($168.50) keep one rate across every band.
