Through Road Child Care Centre operates from Through Road with 44 approved places, the smallest of the three ranked centres by a wide margin. It is community-run rather than part of a group operator, and opens 7:00am to 6:00pm on weekdays.

Its December 2023 assessment returned Exceeding in all seven quality areas, and the assessment before it, in August 2018, also returned Exceeding — more than seven years of unbroken Exceeding across two consecutive assessments. No other centre in Camberwell is above the standard in a single quality area. A regulatory visit in June 2026 found no conditions on the service approval and no enforcement actions in the preceding two years.

Our take

Through Road is first on quality and first on price at the same time, which almost never happens and is worth pausing on. It is the only centre in Camberwell rated above the national standard in any quality area, and it holds that result in all seven — and it charges $168.62 a day, roughly $30 less than the two Meeting-rated centres ranked below it, with the same eight inclusions as one of them. It has also held Exceeding since 2018, so this is a settled result rather than a recent upgrade. The reservations are practical rather than about quality. At 44 approved places it is a third the size of Only About Children, which means fewer rooms, fewer places and a longer wait. It closes at 6:00pm, half an hour before the two below it, which will rule it out for some commutes. If those fit your week, there is no argument on the evidence for paying $30 more a day elsewhere in this suburb.

Best for: Families who want the strongest quality result in the suburb at the lowest rate on this page, in a small community-run centre — and who can work with a 6:00pm close.

All 7 quality areas: Meeting

Regulatory detail and operational conditions

Meeting NQS issued June 2026, across all seven quality areas — the most recent assessment of any long day care service in the locality. The previous assessment, in October 2022, also returned Meeting: a held position rather than movement in either direction.

Regulatory visit July 2026: Last visited by the regulatory authority in July 2026, the most recent visit of the three. No enforcement actions recorded in the past two years. Two conditions on service approval — see below.

Only About Children Camberwell operates from Toorak Road with 136 approved places, three times the size of the top-ranked centre and the largest on this page. It opens 7:00am to 6:30pm on weekdays, the latest close of the three.

Its June 2026 assessment returned Meeting across all seven quality areas — the newest rating in the locality — repeating the Meeting result from October 2022. The service carries two conditions on its approval: one requiring outdoor play equipment to sit no closer than 1.9 metres to the perimeter fencing, and one requiring arrangements within three months of approval for a regional officer to attend a rehearsal of the emergency and evacuation procedures. The first appears on ten services under ten unrelated providers; the second sets a schedule for routine practice. Neither follows an incident, and a July 2026 regulatory visit recorded no enforcement actions in the preceding two years.

What parents say

My three children have all attended OAC Camberwell. OAC campuses are only as good as their educators. Reeta, Jack and Sunita in Toddler 2 are amazing. My two year old attends Toddler 2 three days with these wonderful educators. She arrives with a smile and leaves with a smile. She loves it and is thriving. Over the years, we have also appreciated the leadership from Matt, particularly when my older children have transitioned rooms. Maddi, Yvonne and Mel have also taken wonderful care of our children in the nursery and other rooms.Ben Ferguson via Google
Outstanding care shown for our 3 y/o and 1 y/o. All educators (regardless of whether they directly care for our children) know our children's names and their communication is outstanding. The best child care facilities I have ever seen. Excellent program. Wonderful staff. Both our children are extremely calm and happy to be here.Patrick Boyd via Google
We have been at OAC Camberwell for 2 years and are so happy sending our little one! The team have been nothing but supportive and have consistently gone above and beyond to support her needs. The Educators are so caring and have created a great environment for the kids to thrive.Jamie Newall via Google
Our take

Only About Children Camberwell is second, and the case for it is about capacity and hours rather than quality. It matches the top-ranked centre inclusion for inclusion — every meal, nappies, education programs and excursions — but charges $30.88 a day more for a Meeting rating against an Exceeding one held in all seven quality areas. On the evidence that is a straightforward loss. What it offers instead is scale and a longer day: 136 places against 44, and a 6:30pm close against 6:00pm. For a family who cannot make a six o’clock pickup, or who needs a place this term rather than next year, those are the terms on which this centre wins and the rating does not settle it. Its June 2026 assessment is also the most recent in the suburb. Its two conditions are both class-applied — a fencing setback shared with nine other services, and a scheduled evacuation rehearsal — and neither should count against it.

Best for: Families who need the latest close in the suburb and the most places available, and who want every meal and nappies covered by the rate.

Papilio Early Learning Camberwell operates from Warrigal Road with 98 approved places, and runs 6:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays — twelve hours, the longest day of any centre ranked here and half an hour wider at each end than the top-ranked service.

Its October 2025 assessment returned Meeting across all seven quality areas, repeating the Meeting result from November 2022. A regulatory visit in September 2025 found no conditions on the service approval and no enforcement actions in the preceding two years. The register lists a single inclusion against its daily rate: education programs.

What parents say

We were so happy with the experience at Papilio Camberwell for our toddler prior to COVID-19, but since the pandemic they have really gone to another level. Our son has been supported and kept unaware (in the best way) that anything has really changed, while Papilio's efforts to navigate the changing protocols for hygiene practises, social distancing, as well as the financial and permissions for access has been nothing short of outstanding. Angie and the team have kept us updated throughout with excellent communication and they have continued to deliver a wonderful service to help support our son's development while he is in their care and even when we had to keep him at home. I couldn't see anywhere they could improve and would unhesitatingly endorse the centre to anyone looking for top level care for their children.Meagan McGrath via Google
My little boy has only been with this wonderful centre for a little more than 3 months and I can definitely say that he LOVES this place! I have never seen him happier to be left for the day ever since he started daycare. The moment I walked in for the first time I was wonderfully met by Angie, the centre manager. She has been providing awesome help with every enquiry we have made and responds as soon as possible. I believe that the centre has a strong, very competent and coherent team - you can tell this with how the kids are loving the centre. I highly recommend Papilio Camberwell to parents considering putting their children in a safe, fun and a great learning place. To the Papilio Camberwell team - Thank you very much for all your support and commitment to the children, especially during this difficult times!Mark Frial via Google
We have had a really positive experience with Papilio Camberwell. The staff have been consistently kind, patient, and attentive, and it is clear they genuinely care about the children. Since starting, we’ve noticed real growth in our daughter — especially in her social confidence and communication skills. She comes home more independent, expressive, and the story times we get daily are great. It’s been nice to see her engaging with staff and other kids and enjoying her time there. The environment feels safe, warm, and well-organized, and we’ve always appreciated the updates and openness from the team. We’re grateful to have found a place that supports our daughter’s development in such a balanced, thoughtful way. Highly recommend!Bob C via Google
Our take

Papilio places third on a rating it shares with the centre above it, and the thing that separates them on this page is what the fee covers. It charges $197.70 where Only About Children charges $199.50 — $1.80 less — but the register lists one inclusion against that rate where the others list eight. If that reflects what is actually offered, a family here buys every meal and all nappies on top of a fee that is already among the highest in the suburb, which would make it the most expensive day in Camberwell by a distance rather than the second cheapest of the three. That is a large enough difference to warrant a direct question before comparing it with anything, because a sparse register field is not the same as a confirmed absence. What Papilio does clearly offer is the longest day in the locality, 6:30am to 6:30pm, which no other ranked centre here matches — and for a family whose commute needs both ends of that, it may be the only workable option on this page.

Best for: Families who need the longest day in the suburb — 6:30am to 6:30pm — and who will confirm directly what the daily rate includes before comparing it with anything.

Full-day rates from Starting Blocks, verified 9 August 2026, flat across every age band each service publishes. Average across these three centres is $188.61. Most families are eligible for the Child Care Subsidy, worth up to 90% of the fee depending on household income and activity. Read the inclusions column carefully here: Papilio charges within $2 of Only About Children but lists one inclusion against eight, so the two are not comparable on rate alone.

About childcare in Camberwell

Camberwell sits in the City of Boroondara, about 10 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD. Nine long day care services operate in the locality, and one of them holds Exceeding NQS — in all seven quality areas.

That centre is also the cheapest of the three ranked here, which is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: the strongest quality result in the suburb is attached to the lowest daily rate on this page, $30 to $40 below the two Meeting-rated centres below it. Camberwell is an expensive suburb for childcare, with several services above $195 a day and one at $209.

Each centre was checked against Starting Blocks and the ACECQA national register in the first week of August 2026 — ratings and their dates, the seven quality-area results, daily fees and what each covers, approved places, opening hours, conditions on approval and enforcement history.

Camberwell is an expensive suburb for childcare, and the usual assumption that a higher rate buys a better centre does not hold here.

The best-rated centre is also the cheapest

Through Road is the only long day care service in Camberwell above the national standard in any quality area — and it is above it in all seven — while charging $168.62 a day, roughly $30 less than the two centres ranked below it. It is small, at 44 places, and closes at 6:00pm. Those are the trade-offs, not quality or price.

One fee covers far less than the others

Papilio lists a single inclusion, education programs, against a rate within $2 of a centre that lists eight including every meal and nappies. Priced properly that is a much larger gap than the rates suggest. Register fields are snapshots and a short list is not proof that nothing else is provided, so ask directly before comparing on rate.

Opening hours span a full hour

Papilio runs 6:30am to 6:30pm, Only About Children 7:00am to 6:30pm, and Through Road 7:00am to 6:00pm. If your day needs an early drop-off and a late pickup, that narrows the list before any rating does — and it is the reason the cheapest, best-rated centre will not suit every family here.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best childcare centre in Camberwell?

On the evidence gathered for this page, Through Road Child Care Centre on Through Road. It is the only long day care service in the locality rated above the national standard in any quality area, it holds that result in all seven, and it has held Exceeding since 2018. It is also the cheapest of the three ranked centres at $168.62 a day. The caveats are size and hours: 44 approved places, and a 6:00pm close.

How much does childcare cost in Camberwell?

The three centres ranked here charge $168.62, $199.50 and $197.70 for a full day, averaging $188.61 across the three. Those are the published Starting Blocks rates as at 9 August 2026, each flat across every age band. They are not a guide to the suburb as a whole — six other long day care services operate in Camberwell and their fees are not represented in that figure, one of them at $209.00. Most families can claim the Child Care Subsidy, worth up to 90% of the fee depending on household income and recognised activity.

Why is the highest-rated centre the cheapest?

Partly because it is community-run rather than part of a group operator, and partly because it is small — 44 approved places against 136 and 98 at the two centres ranked below it. Neither of those is a quality signal in itself. What the evidence shows is that Through Road holds Exceeding in all seven quality areas, has held Exceeding since 2018, carries no conditions on its approval and has no enforcement actions, while charging about $30 a day less than centres rated Meeting. Size and a 6:00pm close are the practical trade-offs.

One centre has two conditions on its approval. Should that worry me?

Not on the evidence. Only About Children Camberwell carries a requirement that outdoor play equipment sits no closer than 1.9 metres to the perimeter fencing, and a requirement to arrange for a regional officer to attend a rehearsal of the emergency and evacuation procedures within three months of approval. The first appears on ten services under ten different providers. The second sets a schedule for routine practice rather than remedying a failure — the trigger is the approval itself, not an incident. The centre records zero enforcement actions in the past two years.
